The Beds of Bethnal Green
The Beds of Bethnal Green people
The Bed people are placed on the bedroom floor, scattered and tucked into corners like
vulnerable toys.  As miniature fragments of the abandoned mattresses they are made
from, the Bed people embody a history of rejection and sleep.  The mattresses have
undergone a transformation from being a site of comfort, warmth and safety to
something sordid, dirty and disgusting.  When and how does this change take place?
Does a mattress become disgusting because you don’t know who it belongs to,  or is
everyone’s like that in the light of day?  How does a safe and comforting place become
somewhere no one would even want to touch?  The Bed people are rescued from the grubby
fabric, washed and pieced together. Tiny and laboriously formed they return the
mattresses to an object of intimacy and care. The Bed people may be lumpy, and even
club footed, but they are given a new life:  crawling on the floor, tucked into bed,
exploring corners and crevices in a dry, warm and cosy place.
